Yesterday, I was speaking with one of my clients regarding an issue he was having with lower back pain. As I suggest with most of my clients, I recommended the use of an inversion table. Around two years ago, I purchased an Ironman inversion table second hand. After a few days of use, I could definitely feel my back pain relieving itself. However, it was later on down the line that I begun experiencing symptoms that I wasn’t familiar with. I started having muscle spasms throughout my back. As I was inverting, my back would start to vigorously spasm – resulting in excruciating levels of pain and discomfort. From then onwards, I stopped using my inversion table forever – and have never used one since.
As you can probably imagine, I straight away tried to diagnose the underlying cause. Muscle spasms don’t just happen overnight, they slowly form and occur as a result of something. In this specific case, it was easy to attribute the spasms to inversion therapy. Now, as a qualified inversion therapy practitioner, I know and understand that spasms are a side-effect of continuous use. However, muscle spasms should only occur if the user is overdoing themselves. Here are the questions I asked and the response I got:
- How long were you inverting for? Between 25 and 30 minutes, two times a day.
- How many days a week were you inverting? All 7-days of the week.
Straight away, I was able to diagnose the problem. With inversion therapy, you need to stay safe and stick to a safe routine. During your first week of inversion, I only suggest doing it for a period of 3 – 5 minutes per day, full stop. As you go into your second week, you can move this up to twice a day, and so forth. You should never overwork yourself. It’s like lifting weights. You start small and slowly build yourself up. Inversion therapy is not a miracle waiting to happen. You need to slowly pace yourself to see the true, long-term benefits.

Inversion Therapy is commonly associated with helping to alleviate some of the common distress signals that are released due to lower back pain. However, many of the people I see are simply unaware of the effects of continuous inversion therapy, and what the inversion table is actually helping to achieve. As a person, I never believe that you should buy a product and simply use it without understanding why or how it’s affecting you. We don’t go out into the street and buy a brand new car without test driving it, do we? So why do we purchase products without fully understanding what the effects are going to be, why it’s going to be beneficial and what possible side-effects could come about.
In your lower back, you have several discs that separate the vertebrae. These discs allow for movement throughout the back, and ultimately provide shock absorption from carrying out typical day-to-day activities – including strenuous exercise. However, if you find yourself carrying out daily rigorous exercise, such as athletes, you’ll soon start to feel back pain, or have some common symptoms of back pain. This is because the discs get compressed. Because the disc contains a liquid which can put pressure onto the surrounding nerves, you need to be aware that strenuous exercise can and will affect your nerves – will in turn returns pain. When the liquid of the vertebrae protudes outwards and pressure is put on the nerves, this is known as a slipped or herniated disc.
Through the use of regular inversion therapy, you are effectively applying mild traction to the spine – which in turn makes it become slightly longer. As the spine becomes longer, the spacing in between the vertebrae increases and thus reduces the overall pressure that the disc receives. As the space increases, the pressure on the nerve roots and discs is greatly reduced – which results in less lower back pain.

STEP 1: CHOOSE AN IDEAL ENVIRONMENT
Choosing the right environment and place to invert is crucial. You need to choose an open room where you have lots of space to move around. Place your inversion table in a position where there will be no interruptions – away from tables and chairs.
STEP 2: CORRECTLY ADJUST YOUR INVERSION TABLE
As per your inversion tables instruction booklet or DVD, you should adjust your table according to your individual height and weight. Some tables may have advanced safety straps, and you should ensure that these are tightened. This step only needs to be performed once if you are the sole user of the product.
STEP 3: TIGHTEN THE SAFETY STRAPS
As mentioned in step two, you should double-check that the safety straps are correctly attached to the inversion table. Once attached and secure, you will need to fasten them and begin tightening them. The user manual should offer guidance for attaching the straps, and give you a detailed overview of how the straps are connected to one another. While standing up, fasten the straps around your body and sufficiently tighten them to ensure they aren’t too loose.
STEP 4: REVERT THE TABLE TO THE LEAST DEGREE ANGLE
The minimum degree angle for the majority of tables will be 10-degrees. You should always set your inversion table back to it’s least angle before mounting.
STEP 5: STEP ONTO THE TABLE
Once all of the safety checks have been complete, and the table is at a 10-degree angle, you are ready to mount.
STEP 6: ENSURE YOUR FEET ARE SECURE AND COMFORTABLE
Once you are mounted, ensure that the feet straps are correctly fastened and feel comfortable. It is of paramount importance that your feet do not move during inversion therapy. The majority of inversion tables currently available come complete with ankle adjustments. If you are finding them to be uncomfortable, I have found that wearing tennis shoes negates the discomfort.
STEP 7: LIFT YOUR HANDS ABOVE YOUR SHOULDERS
Once your feet are secured, you can proceed to lift your hands above your shoulders. It is important that your hands are above your shoulders during inversion therapy, as this is what results in your spine receiving an effective workout.
STEP 8: PRACTICE AT LOW DEGREE ANGLES
If you are starting inversion therapy for the first time, I strongly recommend practising at a smaller angle. If you over work your body, you will find that you put too much pressure on your spinal column. As a beginner, I would stick to inverting between 10 degrees and 40 degrees. You can also stand still, and simply invert at the default setting.
STEP 9: INVERT AT HIGHER DEGREE ANGLES
As you begin to use your inversion table more and more, your body will become adjusted to the switch in gravity; allowing you to invert with higher degree angles.
